According to an article in last week’s Las Vegas Review Journal, the Guinn Center, an independent think tank, took a close look at the Question 1 gun control ballot initiative in Nevada. Question 1 is practically identical to the Question 3 ballot initiative in Maine. The study said this about Nevada’s version of Question 3: [it could] be a challenge to enforce, if not altogether unenforceable, without a firearm registration scheme — especially in rural counties with limited resources; [a] claim made by the measure’s opponents seems to be supported by a 2001 Department of Justice survey of inmates, which found that less than 1 percent of the criminals obtained a gun through…

Governor Paul LePage and the state legislature scored a victory for public subsidized housing residents throughout the state by signing Legislative Document 1572, “An Act To Ensure Nondiscrimination against Gun Owners in Public Housing” into law.  This NRA-backed bill prevents landlords from prohibiting firearm possession by law-abiding tenants who live in public housing. “Law-abiding gun owners should not be denied their Second Amendment rights just because of their economic status or street address,” said Chris Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “The right of self-protection is fundamental, and now public housing residents throughout Maine will not be denied that right.”…

Two organizations with interesting names are making a play on your Second Amendment rights in Maine: Maine Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense and Everytown for Gun Safety. But before considering what their policies mean to the law-abiding gun owners of Maine, you might want to consider what their names mean first. Take Maine Moms for example. Which is why the idea of hanging on to the Sunday hunting ban is so perplexing. Take the Deer firearm season for example. Open this year from October 31 to November 26, three full hunting days are lost due to the prohibition of Sunday hunting – five if you add October 30 and November 27.…

Harvey Lembo, a sixty-seven-year-old retired lobsterman from Rockland, Maine, was tired of being robbed. Five times in six years’ thieves broke into his home and stole cash, painkillers, and other valuables. There was no security at his apartment complex. The locks, apparently, were a joke. That left the wheelchair-bound senior with one option if he hoped to defend his life and home – buy a gun. Good thing he did for less than 24 hours after making that purchase another thief attempted to steal from Mr. Lembo – the thief was not successful. After discovering one of their residents used a firearm…
