LePage wins NRA endorsement

NRA lepageThe National Rifle Association has endorsed Republican Gov. Paul LePage in his reelection bid, the group announced on Tuesday.

“Based on his leadership on Second Amendment issues, LePage has earned an “A+” rating from the NRA-PVF in the 2014 general election,” the NRA wrote in a press release. “An “A+” is the highest possible rating and is reserved for elected officials with an excellent public record on critical NRA issues who have also made a vigorous effort to promote and defend the Second Amendment.”

“As Governor, Paul LePage has been an outspoken defender of the Second Amendment and hunting rights in Maine,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of the NRA’s political victory fund. “He vetoed anti-gun legislation that would have restricted our right to keep and bear arms and is leading the charge to defeat the current ‘anti-bear hunting’ ballot question.”

The NRA endorsement is a predictable blow to LePage’s Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud.

During his previous congressional campaigns, Michaud typically received high marks from the NRA for his position on 2nd amendment issues, but he has changed his positions on gun control and downplayed his past support from the pro-gun group now that he is running for statewide office.

In August, Michaud held a fundraiser with former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords who now heads a top gun control advocacy group.
