A fatal single-vehicle crash involving a Tesla on Thursday in Naples, Maine, resulted in a significant firefighter response due to fires caused by a debris field of batteries from the electric vehicle, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office .

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the crash at 752 Harrison Road in Naples, alongside firefighters from Naples, Casco, Sebago, and Bridgton.

“The crash presented significant hazards to first responders and area residents due to the vehicle involved,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

The crash occurred just after 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, when a vehicle described as a 2024 Tesla impacted with a tree at a high speed, causing the electric vehicle to catch fire.

The driver of the vehicle, 33-year-old Sergi Kolesnick of Harrison, Maine, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Per the Sheriff’s Office, the force of the impact caused several components of the vehicle to become dislodged, creating a “significant debris field of batteries” and several spot fires.

Firefighters and EMS responders worked over several hours to contain the scene of the crash and to prevent the fires from spreading to a nearby home and the woods, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The scene was managed as a Hazardous Materials Scene, and a cleanup of the area was still underway as of 3 p.m. on Thursday.

The crash remains under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Go Green, fire departments are totally unprepared to deal with any type of fires resulting from these types of batteries. Just wait until one of the solar sites that contain huge amounts of these catches fire. We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

It’s the tree’s fault.
