The search for an Augusta man who jumped after his dog into the Kennebec River near Bath on Sunday appears to have come to a tragic conclusion on Wednesday when authorities recovered a body from the shore of Wood Island – adjacent to the man’s disappearance.

At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the Maine Marine Patrol announced that their search for Robert Stolt, 22, of Augusta led to the discovery of a body washed up on shore.

Locals on nearby Crawford Island saw the body and called 911 to alert the authorities.

Marine patrol officers, working in conjunction with the Bath police department, recovered the body and transported it to a funeral home, before being brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for identification.

Though the Marine Patrol did not identify the body in its press releases, they linked it to the search for Stolt, who leapt into the Kennebec river on Sunday to rescue his dog which had jumped from his boat while he was fishing.

Authorities successfully recovered the dog, along with a female passenger of Stolt’s boat and a second dog on the day of the incident.
