The sponsors of the upcoming bivalve fest in Yarmouth, Maine are under pressure to come up with some vegetarian options.
Seriously.
A growing number of Redditor queries are focusing on going veggie on the eve of the Yarmouth Clam Festival’s 60th anniversary.
When one Redditor posted a simple question: “Anyone know of any vegetarian options besides fries and desserts?” all heck broke loose.
Maine seafood connoisseurs are having trouble taking seriously questions about going veggie at the clam festival.
“I’m sorry, this absolutely made me roar with laughter. It’s a clam festival,” replied dk_angl1976
“It’s a *clam* festival. Thanks for the lol…definitely need it these days.” – indyaj
“It’s a festival and other than clams it has what you would find at most festivals,” snarked pcetcedce. “It’s almost as if you want to wave a little flag that you’re vegetarian.”
The best response has to be that of wearingabear11: “Clams are vegetarians.”
Well, finally the original poster – steaming by now from all the (well-intentioned) ridicule – had had enough:
“For What It’s Worth I’m excited for the clams, maybe the Lime Rickeys even more. I’m asking for a friend – it’s something I never bothered to pay attention to when I’ve been there,” explained Itsthehappyone.
Born_sprinkles_1225, recalling the last festival, also weighed in defending veggies: “Vegetarian here – didn’t see anything appealing but I also didn’t expect vegetarian options so I had a nice sandwich at home before we went to the parade. 😃”
The popular three-day summer clam fling gets underway July 18 – veggies or no veggies.
The vegan crowd lobbying for a clam option may be driven by reports that Maine’s clamming industry has gone to pot.
The Downeast Institute clams, sorry, claims that rising water temperatures have decimated the clams along Maine’s coast, reducing the harvest over the last few decades by 75 percent.
