Portland Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU) was dispatched to the Verril Street residence to assess the three suspicious items.

The HDU found a claymore mine and two grenades.

Some of the explosive devices were found to be unstable, and were recovered and placed in a containment vessel for save removal by the HDU robot.

No criminal charges will be filed in relation to this incident.

“We are thankful that a concerned citizen erred on the side of caution and reached out to us immediately,” said Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois. “If you ever discover a suspicious package or device, it is always best to be safe and call emergency personnel to assess the situation.”

The Portland Police Department’s HDU is one of three FBI-accredited bomb teams in Maine, and consists of five highly trained technicians.
