A counselor from Corinna, Maine was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor Wednesday for falsifying treatment records in order to obtain higher reimbursement’s from MaineCare, the state’s taxpayer-funded health insurance program.

47-year-old April McKinney, who professionally went by the name April Taylor, was ordered to pay $13,087.62 in restitution to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (Maine DHHS) — the department that administers the MaineCare program.

She was also sentenced to three years of probation and fined $2,500.

According to court records, between April and December 2020, McKinney — who was at that time a licensed counselor — falsified appointment details and session notes in therapy service records in order to bill and receive higher amounts of taxpayer-funded reimbursements from MaineCare.

McKinney pleaded guilty to making false statements involving a health care benefit program in August 2023, and surrendered her counseling license in January 2024 though a consent agreement.
