Three Undocumented Ecuadorian Nationals Taken into Custody by Border Patrol After Crash in Eustis Left Two Seriously Injured

A two-vehicle accident in Eustis early Saturday left two seriously injured and resulted in three undocumented Ecuadorian nationals being taken into custody by Border Patrol, according to police.

Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies and Maine State Police responded to the crash around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 on The Arnold Trail Road off state Route 27 in Eustis.

According to police, 28-year-old Luis Mayancela-Yunga of Biddeford was driving a silver 2010 GMC passenger van south transporting undocumented individuals from Ecuador, when he lost control of the van on the icy road and skidded sideways across the centerline.

The van collided with a northbound 2016 Toyota Rav4 being driven by Jean-Francois Brassard, 26, of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Two passengers of the van were seriously injured and taken to Central Maine Medical Center, while three undocumented individuals were taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol, Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols said.

Because they thought the incident may result in a fatality, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office turned the investigation over to the Maine State Police.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Sunday that Brassard was wearing his seatbelt, but that all five occupants in the van were not.

Moss said speed and road conditions are considered factors in the crash.

Both drivers were not injured, and two individuals that were taken to the hospital are expected to survive, Moss said.

Moss’ Sunday press release did not include the information from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office regarding the three undocumented Ecuadorian nationals being taken into custody by Border Patrol.

While Moss stated that the driver of the van was from Biddeford, Sheriff Nichols said Mayencela-Yunga was in possession of a New York driver’s license that had a State of Maine address on it.

Nichols did not know how an individual might obtain a New York ID with a non-New York address.

Sheriff Nichols said all five occupants of the van were from Ecuador, and the driver was the only occupant who could speak English.

Moss told the Maine Wire Friday that she has been told Mayencela-Yunga had a “valid NY driver’s license.”

Moss said that Maine State Police “does not determine immigration status nor handle subsequent enforcement,” referring further questions to Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for additional information regarding the detainment of the three undocumented Ecuadorian nationals Friday morning.

This story will be updated with any additional information or comments from CBP or ICE officials.

Duh, Shannon Moss you can buy an ID of any kind on the streets of New York or Boston. Any teenager can tell you where to buy fake ids. Are you really the person who tells the story for MSP because anything you say is suspect.

Well southern Maine is in the news again. The great democratic City is the home of the driver of the van with the illegals in. How many more illegals living in Biddeford I wonder? The French speaking town is a Spanish speaking town! And a Joe Biden strong. Keep that boarder open Joe. Do not lift your pen and reenact Trump rules. New York licenc
with a Biddeford address! Does that the New York authorites can not read or is the licence a counterfit? Do the State police Know an not saying how bad it is OR is new york just giving anyone a licence so any one can vote and vote for Joe. I feel sory for the canaden driver trying to explain this one to his insurance company. What would you do?
A lot of problems here folks. Is the State paying for legal bills of the illegals. We will be paying for it with our increased insurance bills. This is so messed up right King, Collins, Jared, and Schelly. We are all going to love this next ellection time.

Super – more illegals in Maine causing tax burdens for hospital and medical bills, along with causing injury to legal residents. We will end up funding all their legal costs too.

Good looking van. New they run 50 to 60 thousand dollars. Were does a young kid get that kind of money? Bet the cops asked that question. Does our Senator King have the answer or may be Joe Biden?

  9. Sandy on February 17, 2024 5:12 PM

No problem—Biden will help! Biden will facilitate immigration for Ecuadorians with relatives in the US to stop illegal crossings

  10. Craig on February 18, 2024 5:16 AM

If the drivers license was fake, do you suppose the van was legally registered and insured? And how much you want to bet they are released without any charges?

Appears to me Mayencela-Yunga was getting paid by her “passengers” to melt into the U.S.

  14. beachmom on February 19, 2024 10:17 AM

    Not undocumented! Illegal aliens!
    Say what they are.
Illegals aren’t supposed to have licenses yet I see them driving around Portland, So Portland every day. I’ve been close to being taken out by them every week.
    They drive beautiful cars too.
I saw one in a brand new Nissan suv. I looked it up and it was a $65,000 vehicle.
Of course the cops can’t stop them. No way to know if they’ve been here for years or are new and driving illegally.
Just think of the fun during election season!

I have a friend who is a hard working Maine native. He got one DUI and now he can never visit Canada again due to their strict border laws. How is it that all these illegals can easily cruise through Canada, multiple times, to reach our borders? There is something fishy going on in Trudeau land.I think it’s time for the Maine Wire to investigate. Keep up your great work.
