A Maine teacher was arrested Thursday following information that she had been engaging in inappropriate sexual relations with a minor student.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office began its investigation after being given information that a teacher at Hebron Academy, a boarding high-school and middle-school, was engaging in an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.

“Our top priority is always to ensure that our students can learn in a safe, supportive, and inclusive community. That responsibility guides our policies, procedures, and all of our actions. This employee is no longer employed at our school. She is a graduate of the school and was hired last year. We will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement. We conduct background checks of all employees and require training related to boundaries and mandated reporting of abuse,” said Hebron Academy Spokesman David Ball in response to a request from The Maine Wire.

The investigation revealed that 24-year-old Madeline New, a graduate of the academy from Paris, Maine, had been engaging in sexual relations with a male student.

New, who was hired in 2023, was also discovered to have furnished the student with scheduled, illegal drugs.

New was taken to the Oxford County jail, and charged with Furnishing Scheduled Drugs, and Gross Sexual Assault.

Following the arrest, New was released following a $5,000 bail, and is forbidden from entering within 1,000 feet of Hebron Academy.

Although the Sheriff’s Office did not reveal the age of the minor involved, New has been forbidden from all contact with anyone under the age of 16, suggesting that the minor involved was under that age.

Currently, New is awaiting arraignment, with her court date set for June.

The Maine Wire reached out to Hebron Academy administration, asking how the school will prevent similar incidents in the future, and how New circumvented the safety measures already in place.

Although Hebron Academy highlighted the security measures already in place, including background checks for staff, they did not address how a similar incident will be prevented in the future, or whether any new measures will be taken following the incident.

Why are so many teachers pervs?

The reason why so many teachers get into these situations is that they have daily access to our children and all the temptations that might be for some. I have been chairman of a Maine School district board and have seen this several times. More often it has been a male teacher and female student but lately more female teachers have succumbed to this temptation. Sad.
