Maine Democrats who welcomed Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff to Maine and appeared alongside him at a Portland abortion clinic for a political campaign event have remained silent in the face of credible allegations from three women that Emhoff physically assaulted them.
Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, has been a prominent figure in promoting a “new masculinity” and advocating for women’s rights, as he supports his second wife’s campaign for president.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, Emhoff allegedly assaulted a former girlfriend during an altercation in Cannes, France, after attending a high-profile gala. Three friends of the woman involved, identified only as “Jane” to protect her privacy, claimed that Emhoff was intoxicated and became angry, accusing her of flirting with another man.
The confrontation reportedly led to the immediate end of their relationship.
The allegations of drunken domestic violence that surfaced Wednesday contradict Mr. Kamala Harris’ image as a male feminist role model; however, Democrats nationally and in Maine have been keen to ignore this case of violence against a woman, likely because it’s political inconvenient.
Maine State Sen. Stacy Brenner (D-Cumberland), who appeared on stage with Vice President Harris’s husband as the pair talked about the importance of abortion to Democratic voters, did not respond to an email asking for her reaction to the claims made by three friends of the woman Emhoff is alleged to have assaulted.
The League of Women Voters, which purports to represent the interests of female voters in Maine and is closely aligned with Democratic Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, similarly declined to respond to an inquiry about the alleged assault.
Corporate media outlets in Maine have likewise avoided coverage of the assault allegation. A view of the George Soros-funded Press Herald, the Bangor Daily News, the taxpayer-funded Maine Public, and the left-wing News Center Maine found zero stories about the alleged assault.
In contrast, all of those outlets ran dozens upon dozens of stories on former New York Rep. George Santos, a cartoonish Republican figure who was expelled from Congress before pleading guilty to wire fraud and identity theft.
The allegations of the incident in Cannes are not the only controversy to have recently emerged about Emhoff’s previous treatment of women. In August, he acknowledged having an extramarital affair during his marriage to his first wife, Kerstin Emhoff.
Speaking to CNN, Emhoff admitted to having a relationship with their then ten-year-old daughter’s teacher and nanny. According to British media sources, the woman became pregnant as a result of the affair but “did not keep the child.” It is unclear whether the pregnancy ended with an abortion or an adoption.
The incident predates Emhoff’s marriage to Harris in 2014, but it stands in contrast to his public role as an advocate for women’s rights and against “toxic masculinity.”
In a written statement to Semafor on Friday, a spokesperson for Emhoff denied the allegation and insisted that the Second Gentleman would never assault a woman.
