A Westbrook man who had an eight-hour standoff with police after they responded to his residence over a report of domestic violence was sentenced this week to just over five years in federal prison for the illegal possession of a firearm.

Corey Faulkner, 39, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Portland to 64 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.

In October 2023, officers from the Westbrook Police Department responded to Faulkner’s residence over a 911 call reporting an alleged domestic violence incident.

The victim, after fleeing from the residence and calling the police, reported that Faulkner had strangled her, had access to firearms and had made suicidal statements.

Law enforcement formed a perimeter around the residence after Faulkner ceased communications with the officers, and ordered a shelter-in-place for the nearby buildings during the standoff, which lasted more than eight hours.

The standoff concluded when officers obtained a state arrest warrant for Faulkner and made used of unmanned drones and a robot to breach the residence’s basement and to locate Faulkner in a bathroom, after which he surrendered.

Prosecutors say that a 12-gauge shotgun, 12-gauge ammunition, a 9mm pistol case, and 9mm ammunition was found during an initial search of Faulkner’s residence, and that a 9mm pistol was recovered from a kitchen cabinet during a second search.

Faulkner was prohibited from possession any firearms due to a 2013 state conviction for the charges of operating under the influence, endangering the welfare of a child, and domestic violence assault.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Faulkner was also convicted in 2018 of aggravated assault after punching a woman, dousing her with rubbing alcohol and threatening to set her on fire, and strangling her.

Do LEO’s ever trace where this prohibited person acquired the firearms? We never hear how they get them illegally but all we hear is how we need to restrict lawful purchases of firearms. That is why I am sick of hearing lawmakers rush to restrict lawful firearm sales every time there is a high profile incident (do you hear me Jared Golden)? This guy probably didn’t have to wait 72 hours before buying his firearms but I do.
