Failed Mills Tourism Summit Didn’t Move Needle on US-Canada Relations, Canadians Unsurprised

If the failed Canadian summit sponsored by Maine’s Democrat governor is any indication, she may want a reset on her planned “goodwill” tour en francais.

Gov. Janet Mills held a tete-a-tete with Canadian premiers to try to bash Trump’s alleged anti-tourist tariffs.

But out of it came a big goose egg – lots of talk but no substance.

Maybe it would have been a good idea to hold the meeting in Maine as opposed to Boston where she traveled for it?

After all, if you’re trying to sell Pier Fries to mes-amies Quebeceers it might have been more fruitful to do your sales pitch near the pier in Old Orchard Beach.

As it were, the Boston party brioche accomplished nothing – and that dire encapsulation is from the Mills-friendly Portland Press Herald.

“Mills joined a handful of Northeast governors and Canadian premiers in Boston, where they emphasized the region’s economic and cultural ties but did not offer concrete steps to combat the impacts of President Donald Trump’s tariffs and aggressive rhetoric,” Mills’ favorite newspaper reported.

“We want to make sure that Canadian citizens understand that we want them to come,” Mills said. “I’m taking my own good-will road trip next week.”

So if you planned a busted Canadian tourism summit to claim you want visitors from the north to flood the Pine Tree State, why would you pile on that failure with Summit 2.0?

Canadians contacted by The Maine Wire were unsurprised the summit came to naught.

“It seemed like more of a political exercise than anything else,” said one Toronto native who withheld his name out of concern for government reprisals. “It helps incumbent premiers in Canadian provinces to position themselves as sort of ‘national champions.’ I guess Democratic governors in your country also want to make themselves look like important people even when the federal government doesn’t give a (bleep) about them,” he added.

“It was not top news in Canada,” a Calgary resident told The Maine Wire when asked about the summit. Speculating on its motivation, the Alberta native said “they (Democrat governors) have all the interest in the world to work around the federal government at this point.”

Janet’s overtures to Canadians aren’t even resonating with Americans, let alone with our neighbors to the north. “Meh,” was the reaction from one Redditor when Janet announced the Boston Summit. “Canada needs us way more than we need them.”

Moreover, that poster added, Janet is just a worry-wart.

“Funny, I’ve still seen a ton of Canadian license plates driving around here. Don’t worry about it, we will still have plenty of flatlanders and snow backs coming here to spend money this summer.”

No matter, as a last-ditch effort to try to torch the White House, Mills still plans to meet with New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston.

The lame-duck governor said she would release more details on her plans next week.

Hold the presses.
