‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ Could Shutter Hundreds Of Planned Parenthood Clinics

Planned Parenthood could be forced to close hundreds of its clinics if the Republicans’ reconciliation bill is signed into law with proposed funding cuts for abortion providers in place.

The Senate voted on Tuesday to approve the GOP’s massive tax and spending bill, which includes language blocking Medicaid funding for abortion providers for one year. The provision was approved by the Senate parliamentarian on Monday and is expected to remain in the final version of the bill.

Planned Parenthood described the bill as “dangerous” and warned of devastating implications for its operations, which heavily rely on taxpayer funding.

“If Planned Parenthood is ‘defunded,’ nearly 200 Planned Parenthood health centers in 24 states across the country are at risk of closure, leaving 1.1 million patients without access to health care,” Planned Parenthood said in a statement this week as the Senate prepared to vote on the reconciliation package. “The bill would also decimate abortion access, as most health center closures would occur in states where abortion is legal and protected.”

Planned Parenthood performed over 400,000 abortions in fiscal year 2023-24 and received more than $700 million in government reimbursements and grants, according to its latest annual report. Meanwhile, private contributions dropped 31% in fiscal year 2023-2024 compared to the previous year, totaling $684.1 million.

“Planned Parenthood should look in the mirror for the reason their centers are shuttering,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Even corporate media admit the abortion giant prioritizes political activism and lawsuits over health care. While their services such as STI tests, cancer screenings and prenatal care rapidly decline, Planned Parenthood’s focus is on abortions, gender transitions and political spending — all while raking in over $2 million a day from taxpayers.”

“Many times they’ve been offered a path to keep their funding by dropping abortions, but they refuse. Meanwhile, they have no monopoly on health, as women already go to community health centers that provide much more comprehensive care and are more accessible, outnumbering Planned Parenthoods 15:1 nationwide,” Dannenfelser added.

In February, a New York Times investigation found local Planned Parenthood clinics were routinely failing to provide quality care, highlighting instances of botched abortions and IUD placements, along with cases where patients were prepared for the wrong procedures and staff administered the wrong medications.

Some Democrats have framed the defunding of abortion providers through the reconciliation bill as a “cost” to taxpayers, citing estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that the bill could increase the national deficit by $300 million due to more babies being born.

Moderate Senate Republicans Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska sided with Democrats on Monday to strike the provision from the reconciliation bill, though Murkowski ultimately voted in favor of the bill.

If the final reconciliation bill is approved, it would represent another major setback for Planned Parenthood, following the Supreme Court’s Thursday ruling finding that the organization lacks the legal standing to challenge South Carolina’s decision to exclude it from receiving Medicaid funding.

More than 20 Planned Parenthood clinics have reportedly closed since the start of 2025, when President Donald Trump took office. Just yesterday, a clinic in Cleveland shut down, citing cuts to Title X funding from the administration.

Planned Parenthood did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
