A 68-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly fatally striking a bicyclist with his vehicle and then leaving the scene in Scarborough last week.

The collision in question occurred on Friday, June 27, shortly after 4 a.m., near the area of Southgate Road on U.S. Route 1.

A motor vehicle struck a bicyclist, and the operator of the motor vehicle fled the scene, police said.

The bicyclist, identified as 50-year-old Howard Gribbin, was taken to Maine Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The area of Route 1 between Haigis Parkway and Payne Road was shut down for about three hours on Friday as police investigated the scene.

On Tuesday, July 1, police were able to identify a suspect vehicle related to the collision.

At about 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, police located the vehicle and identified 68-year-old Saran Sun as the operator of the vehicle on the morning of the accident.

Sun was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving injury or death, a Class C felony.
