Waldoboro Police Officers and Lincoln County Sheriff Deputies responded to a residence on Genthner Road after receiving a 911 call at around 8:25 a.m. asking for a welfare check on Levern Kelley, 53.
After the body was discovered, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit arrived to assist in the investigation. Levern was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was conducted on Sunday afternoon.
The autopsy revealed that the death was a homicide, but police have not released any details on the cause. According to the Maine State Police, there is no known danger to the public involved in the case.
Kelley, who was known more commonly as Bernie, was a health care worker at Pen-Bay Medical Center who had lived in Union for 20 years before moving to Waldoboro.
“My mother was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be forever missed. She was kind and loving to everyone she knew and had the biggest heart,” Kelley’s daughter, Amanda Gustafson said. Gustafson set up a GoFundMe page that shares information about the victim and provides an avenue for donations towards her funeral expenses.
The investigation remains ongoing, though police notably did not mention that they are searching for a suspect.
