The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Milford business on Saturday night and discovered a three-year-old child dead in a car registered to her mother, Kelly Brown, 40, of Havertown, Pennsylvania.

Deputies located Brown nearby and detained her.

Prior to the child’s tragic death, Brown and her daughter had been subject to attempts to locate them after requests for welfare checks from concerned family members.

After discovering the deceased child, the Penobscot Sheriff’s Department requested assistance with the investigation from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.

The child was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

At around 5:00 a.m., officers from the State Police arrested Brown and charged her with manslaughter. She was transported to the Penobscot County Jail.

Police did not provide details on what Brown was doing as her child was dying in her car.
