The Sheriff’s Department received reports on Friday that Pauline Berardi, 70, of Plymouth, had gone missing from her home on August 15. The department issued a press release one day after receiving the report, requesting the public to inform authorities of any sightings of Berardi.
The investigation was conducted by the department’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit, suggesting that they suspected possible foul play in the disappearance.
At around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, law enforcement discovered Berardi’s body in a wooded area off Williams Road in Newport. Law enforcement transported the body to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Augusta, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine her cause of death.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, there is no active threat to the public, but the investigation remains ongoing.
In the initial release announcing that Berardi went missing, law enforcement reported that she was seen leaving her home in a black sedan driven by an unknown driver.
