Auburn police received reports on July 15 from a minor who had allegedly been sexually abused.

The minor informed them that Philip Libby, 44, of Auburn, had sexually assaulted her while she was under his care.

In response to the allegations, detectives began an investigation and conducted multiple interviews.

During the course of the investigation, Libby allegedly confessed to the crime, and police obtained an arrest warrant and took him into custody on July 30.

He was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail, where he faces charges of gross sexual assault. He is currently being held on $100,000 bail.

The department praised the alleged victim’s courage in coming forward.

It is not clear why the Auburn Police Department announced the arrest on Friday, despite it having taken place in July.
