An allegedly alcohol-related single-vehicle crash in Penobscot on Saturday tragically left a Bucksport man dead.
At approximately 7:46 p.m., the Hancock Regional Communications Center received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Front Ridge Road.
Hancock Sheriff’s Department Detective Dylan Hall arrived with additional deputies and headed up the investigation.
Based on the investigation, the sheriff’s department believes that Zachary McKechnie, 35, of Bucksport, was traveling northwest on Front Ridge Road towards Orland when he veered off the road.
He then allegedly returned to the road before the vehicle rolled. He was reportedly ejected from the vehicle during the crash and died as a result of his injuries.
Speed and alcohol are both believed to have contributed to the tragic crash.
Hancock Sergeant Marcus Downes is working to reconstruct the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Speed and alcohol allegedly contributed to this accident, and I suspect it’s probably a few other things as well.
The problem I have is with the way “alcohol involved” is defined — a 0.01 is defined as involving alcohol, when medical experts say that you have to be at least 0.02 to have any effect on the human body, 0.02 also being the limit for under 21.
To put this into perspective, 0.04 is the limit for airline pilots, 0.08 is the limit for driving, back in the 1970s, the limit for driving was 0.15.
If he had 0.2, that definitely contributed to the accident, a 0.02, not so much….
