Ryan Jennings, a coach and father from North Yarmouth, died while rescuing his children from rip currents during a family vacation in South Florida.
Jennings, 46, his wife Emily, and their three young children were visiting Ryan’s parents near Juno Beach.
Two of the kids were caught in rip currents while swimming with their father, authorities were quoted by WPBF-TV.
Witnesses said Jennings immediately swam after them, saving the children but losing his own life in the process.
He was able to pick up and toss his son away from the current and held his daughter over his head until she could gain her footing.
Emily Jennings recently learned she is pregnant with their third child. She also has a son from a previous relationship.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise money to help Emily raise the children.
June Anthony, who was on the beach when the crisis unfolded, posted a heartfelt note to Ryan’s widow on his published obituary.
“I was on the beach when this horrible tragedy occurred. I called 911 and talked to the 911 operator to get help.
“Please know we tried to save your husband. He was heroic in that he saved your son and daughter but sadly sacrificed his own life.
“I wish I knew your husband because he must have been the most amazing loving husband and dad ever. Your children expressed how much they loved him on the beach as we prayed for him. Please know I will pray for you all and will think of you often.”
