Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey testified Monday in support of LD 1619, a bill that would make Maine’s abortion laws the most permissive in the United States.

Asked what legal protections an unborn child would have if the bill passed, Frey said the decision to have an abortion doesn’t concern a child.

“This is a woman making a decision about what to do with her body and what’s going on with her body,” Frey said.

“There isn’t a live child that’s been– that’s out at this point, that this decision is concerned with,” he said.

The only restrictions Frey sees as necessary for abortion is whether a medical professional signs off on the procedure.

Frey is currently under investigation for having an affair with a married subordinate.

Despite having said on the campaign trail several times that she would not support changes to Maine’s abortion laws, Gov. Janet Mills changed her position on abortion immediately after winning re-election to a second term.

Planned Parenthood, one of the largest abortion clinic operators in Maine, spent more than $350,000 in the 2022 elections supporting Maine candidates with independent expenditures through its Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund.

$96,713 of that spending backed Mills.
