You Can Come Out Now!

Today marks the end of Kaci Hickox’s incubation period!  Hickox has faced numerous threats of quarantine over the 21 days since she returned from treating Ebola victims in West Africa.  The outspoken nurse has been a fierce critic against quarantines for individuals not showing symptoms of the deadly disease.  After a brief standoff with the governor, Hickox was ordered by a court to undergo continued monitoring for the remainder of the 21 days.  The Press Herald has reported that Hickox and her boyfriend are planning on leaving Maine moving to Freeport. Quixotic Referendum in Spain

Catalonia, a largely autonomous region of Spain, symbolically voted to secede from Spain.  Although the referendum vote was non-binding, it signals the regions long held desire for independence from Spain.  Meanwhile, Spanish officials have claimed that any binding resolution of secession would be illegal, cutting off hope for a peaceful separation.   The informal referendum follows similar sentiments in communities around the world, such as Scotland and south Florida.

Have Mercy!

Cape Elizabeth officials have voted to ban roosters on property lots under 40,000 feet.  The ban was largely enacted due to complaints over one pet rooster, Elvis.  Although Elvis has been given, officials hope that the ban will prevent further controversy in the future.  Apparently, Elvis’ crooning wasn’t as welcome as his namesake.

The Strike Continues

Over the weekend, Faripoint workers from across New England held a rally in Portland.  The workers have been on strike since mid-October, with little evidence of any end in sight.  Negotiations are set to resume on November 18 after a long hiatus.

Gas Prices Fall in Fall

Gas prices in Maine continue to drop, with the average cost of a gallon of gas coming in at $3.03.  While prices in Maine are still above average, they have dropped by over 30 cents in the past year.  Enjoy it while you can!

Yesterday, Germany marked the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall.  Google celebrated the event with the following video, highlighting pieces of the historic structure around the world.  Doesn’t look like Portland made the list.
