The leader of a Democratic Socialists of America rally in Maine that called Hamas’s terror attacks in Israel a “morally and legally legitimate response” is a social studies teacher at the Maine Virtual Academy (MEVA), an Augusta-based public charter school.
Zachary Campbell, 29, of Waterville, joined MEVA in 2019 to teach civics, modern world history, Maine history, and U.S. history, according to a profile that appeared in a MEVA newsletter.
The public high school teacher was among the most vocal of Maine DSA members who took to Monument Square last week to denounce Israel and advocate Hamas just days after Hamas terrorists slaughtered 1,300 Israeli men, women, and children.
“The actions of the resistance over the course of the last day is a morally and legally legitimate response to the occupation,” he said, referring to Hamas’s murder, rape, and kidnapping of Israeli citizens, as well as several Americans and Europeans.
“The corporate media and politicians want the public to believe that Israel is simply defending itself from ‘terrorism’ — that’s a lie,” Campbell said.
Nearly 200 hostages taken by Hamas have yet to be rescued or released despite an ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza.
“Netanyahu you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide,” said Campbell, as fellow DSA members chanted along.
K12, the for-profit company that operates MEVA, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Campbell’s remarks.
