A 6-year-old missing child from Iowa has been found safe on Peaks Island off the coast of Portland.

Avery Doherty, 6, of Ames, Iowa was found by police on Peaks Island on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Ames Police said that Esther Bender, the child’s mother, unlawfully removed Avery from Iowa on or about Oct. 14, 2023, in violation of a court order.

Bender, 41, was arrested on Peaks Island and charged with Violation of a Custodial Order, a serious misdemeanor under Iowa state law.

“We want to that the Story County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police, Portland (ME) Police Department and the FBI for their assistance in this continued investigation,” the Ames Police stated in a Thursday press release.

“A shout out to many of our officers involved with helping the Ames, Iowa PD locate Avery,” the Portland Police Department posted to X Thursday.
