Following former. President Donald Trump’s victory in the South Carolina primary, Republican National Convention (RNC) Chair Ronna McDaniel has announced her decision to step down.

“I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition,” said McDaniel.

McDaniel’s announcement has been expected since Frmr. President Trump announced that he would push for changes in the RNC following the South Carolina primary.

Trump, who originally nominated McDaniel for her position after he won the 2016 election, tapped North Carolina GOP Chair Michael Whatley to replace her in statements made earlier in February.

Ronna McDaniel has been the longest serving RNC chair in modern history, but has garnered criticism more recently, with former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy publically asking her to step down.

“We’ve become a party of losers at the end of the day. There’s a cancer in the republican establishment,” said Ramaswamy at a November 2023 RNC debate.

McDaniel will officially step down on March 8, shortly after “Super Tuesday” when 15 state primaries will be held.

The Republican nominee will then be able to nominate his preferred choice to replace McDaniel.
