A shipment originating from China containing over 1,000 pounds of a methamphetamine precursor powder was intercepted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Chicago last week.
According to CBP, the shipment was heading toward Wood Dale, Chicago, from Shenzhen, China, when it was detained on Thursday, April 11 by CBP officers and found to contain 26 boxes of unknown powder.

The two types of powder in the shipment were sent to CBP’s Laboratories and Scientific Services for testing.
The first powder was identified as BMK methyl Glycidate, a precursor chemical in the synthesis for methamphetamine, while the second powder was identified as Benzocaine, a cutting agent for cocaine.
A total of 1,117 pounds of the methamphetamine precursor and 225 pounds of the cocaine cutting agent were seized by CBP.
“Our ability to collect intelligence and the experience and knowledge of our officers were key in stopping these shipments,” said LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director of CBP’s Chicago Field Office, in a Tuesday press release.

“Transnational criminals exploit dependencies and addictions to sell their illicit goods,” Sutton-Burke said. “Our officers are trained to identify shipments that contain these potentially dangerous substances and will continue to work to keep private citizens and their families safe.”
The shipment was turned over to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations and is pending investigation.
