On Maine’s June 11 primary election day, a conservative political action committee says it collected more than 40,000 signatures on a petition in favor of implementing photo voter ID laws in the state via referendum next year.

The initiative, Voter ID for ME, is led by Dinner Table PAC, a political activist group led by Alex Titcomb and State Rep. Laurel Libby (R-Auburn), which has become a fundraising powerhouse for conservative causes in the state.

The most recent filings with the Maine Ethics Commission show a related Dinner Table Action leadership PAC operated by Titcomb has over $250,000 cash on hand, collecting over $90,000 in contributions during the 2024 election cycle so far.

The Voter ID for ME ballot question committee has raised about $18,500, and spent nearly half of that amount in the leadup to the June 11 primary, per the most recent available campaign finance filings.

According to a Thursday press release from Voter ID for ME’s Executive Director Alex Titcomb, the group’s petition to put voter ID on the ballot collected 40,163 signatures on the primary election day — about half of the total amount required.

“We’re thrilled with our success on June 11th,” Titcomb said. “Collecting more than half the required signatures in just one day is a resounding statement from Maine voters.”

“Despite the low voter turnout statewide, the enthusiasm for Voter ID is unmistakable, and our organizational effort has paid extraordinary dividends,” he added. “This issue transcends political affiliations, and we’re excited to keep pushing forward to let Maine voters decide.”

The earliest the Voter ID law question could be on the ballot is November 2025, if the group is able to collect and submit the required 67,682 valid signatures from registered Maine voters by Jan. 23, 2025.

“The people of Maine have spoken loud and clear,” Rep. Laurel Libby said Thursday. “The overwhelming support on Primary Election Day underscores the public’s desire to strengthen our election process, even as the legislature refuses to do so.”

“Our 347 Election Day volunteers put in a phenomenal effort, working tirelessly to achieve this milestone,” Libby said. “Their dedication is driving Voter ID for ME towards success.”

In February, Democratic lawmakers on Maine’s Legislative Council unanimously voted down a proposed bill that would have outlawed ballot harvesting and required voters to present a valid photo ID on election day.

A total of 14 states do not require any identification for voting: Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, California, Hawaii, and Washington D.C.

If the ballot question committee is successful in their aim of implementing a photo voter ID law in the state, Maine would join a group of 21 states that require photo identification for voting.

The Maine Wire has previously reported on how easily non-citizens can register to vote in Maine.

Photo ID is not required to register to vote in Maine — anyone wishing to register to vote merely needs to check a box affirming that they are a citizen, and present one of many forms of identification and proof of residence accepted by municipal registrars.

As conservatives, we need to spread the word on this. Tell your family, friends, coworkers, anybody on our side. This needs to happen. PERIOD.

The other 13 of the 14 states that require no ID presentation for voting are left wing demorat run entities. OH, and that is what Maine has become in the fifty odd years during which my Family has been lucky enough to live here. I will sign.

Before I relocated to the free state, I personally witnessed a voter in Maine come into the town office and tell the clerk my name is Joe Blow and the clerk responded, do you live at 123 Maine street which he said yes, and she handed him a ballot. Voter ID would prevent this!
