Several readers have forwarded the Bangor newspaper’s Monday story on illicit Chinese-controlled marijuana grow sites in Norridgewock, so I figured it was worth posting some comments.
The taxpayer-subsidized newspaper has finally decided to do something on the triad weed beat other than re-write law enforcement press releases or review court filings. Their gumshoe reporters were apparently oblivious to the vast criminal conspiracy that cropped up in their backyards until conservative media shamed them into covering it.
However, the story the paper ran Monday is an unsubtle argument that Maine law enforcement should stop cracking down on the Chinese mafia drug sites because the triad operatives running them are good neighbors who pay their property taxes.
A few excerpts:
“The people associated with the homes were good residents in general, whether they were illegally growing marijuana or not, Labelle said…
“‘They were good neighbors,’ Storer said. ‘That’s smart of them.’…
“The town may be worse off now that the properties were raided and left alone, Labelle said…”
Pay no mind to the violations of immigration law, tax law, and cannabis laws. Never mind that legitimate cannabis business owners are being driven into bankruptcy by illegal foreign competition and our housing stock is being destroyed at a time of generational housing scarcity. Don’t worry about mass labor exploitation and human trafficking. Stealing electricity? No big deal. Pesticides and fungicides making their way into the lungs of medicinal marijuana patients? Who cares, right?
Perhaps it would be better if the Bangor newspaper stuck with re-printing Democrat press releases and left the investigative journalism to the adults.
