Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, has been heralded by Democratic politicians and left-wing media as offering America a “new masculinity.”
But reports emerged Wednesday that Emhoff once drunkenly assaulted an ex-girlfriend because he thought she was flirting with another man.
The Daily Mail reported Wednesday that Emhoff has been accused of slapping a former girlfriend during an altercation in 2012, according to allegations made by friends of the woman involved.
The alleged incident occurred in Cannes, France, after the couple attended a star-studded gala, and comes as Emhoff has presented himself as a strong advocate for women’s rights during his tenure as the nation’s Second Gentleman.
Emhoff, who was celebrated by Maine Democrats when he visited a Portland abortion clinic earlier this year, also acknowledged in August that he’d had an extramarital affair.
In response to questions from CNN, Emhoff acknowledged cheating on his first wife, Kerstin Emhoff, with their then ten-year-old daughter’s teacher and nanny. Sources told British media that the woman Emhoff slept with became pregnant as a result of the assignation, but she “did not keep the child.” It’s not clear whether she elected to have an abortion or gave the child up for adoption.
The ex-girlfriend Emhoff allegedly assaulted, identified by the Daily Mail only as “Jane” to protect her identity, was reportedly struck by Emhoff after he accused her of flirting with another man. Three friends of Jane provided corroborating accounts to the outlet, detailing how she called one of them in tears shortly after the incident, stating that Emhoff had struck her across the face with significant force.
The friends, who spoke under anonymity for fear of reprisal, recounted Jane’s description of the evening. After attending an AIDS charity gala at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes, the two were waiting in line for a car when Emhoff allegedly became enraged, believing Jane was flirting with a valet. In response, he reportedly slapped her hard enough to cause her to spin around. Jane reportedly ended the relationship that night.
These claims contrast sharply with Emhoff’s public image as a supporter of gender equality and women’s rights. He has often appeared beside Harris on the campaign trail and in media interviews discussing his commitment to combating “toxic masculinity.” The incident described by Jane’s friends predates Emhoff’s marriage to Harris, which began in 2014.
Emhoff has not commented on the latest allegations.
Emhoff, 59, and Harris, who married in 2014, have presented a united public front as advocates for women’s issues, with Emhoff frequently lauded for his role in supporting Harris’s political career.
