President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former New York Congressman Lee Zeldin (R) to serve in his cabinet as the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Zeldin served four terms as a Republican in the U.S. House representing Long Island, and narrowly lost a race for governor of New York against incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2022.

“It is an honor to join President Trump’s Cabinet as EPA Administrator,” Zeldin wrote in a post to X Monday afternoon shortly after the news of Trump’s choice broke.

“We will restore US energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs, and make the US the global leader of AI. We will do so while protecting access to clean air and water,” Zeldin added.

In a statement on his choice of Zeldin to head the EPA, President-Elect Trump said that the former New York Congressman has a “very strong legal background” and “has been a true fighter for America First policies.”

“He will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet,” Trump stated.

“He will set new standards on environmental review and maintenance, that will allow the United States to grow in a healthy and well-structured way,” Trump continued.

“I have known Lee Zeldin for a long time, and have watched him handle, brilliantly, some extremely difficult and complex situations,” he added. “I am very proud to have him in the Trump Administration, where he will quickly prove to be a great contributor!”

Trump’s choice of Zeldin as EPA administrator comes after his picks of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as UN ambassador, and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and former ICE Director Tom Homan as his “Border Czar.”
