Biddeford drivers were delayed and their driving patterns disrupted Thursday when they were forced to find a way around Pomerleau Street, which was closed as authorities worked to deal with a flaming pile of garbage dumped in the road.

At around 4:30 a.m., the Biddeford Regional Communication Center received a call informing them of a garbage truck catching fire on Pomerleau Street.

Complying with protocol for a truck fire, the driver emptied his flaming load of trash onto the street.

The Biddeford Fire Department arrived to extinguish the blaze, but the road remained closed for the cleanup operation. The Fire Department warned that the cleanup would take a long time, and as of noon on Thursday, the city had not announced that the road was reopened.

The city clarified that the truck involved was from a private trash collection service and did not affect municipal trash collection activities.
