Portland Police announced Monday morning that their Hazardous Devices Unit investigated a “suspicious package” at the corner of Congress and State Streets, eventually finding it not be dangerous.
Portland Police responded to 188 State Street shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Monday for a report of a suspicious package.
Police had asked the public to avoid the area.
The department’s Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU), known informally as the Bomb Squad, is one of only three FBI-accredited bomb teams in Maine, and uses specialized equipment to approach, inspect and disarm explosive devices.
According to an update posted by police later Monday morning, the package was a “pelican case” that had writing on its exterior indicating that it was explosive.
The Portland Police HDU took x-rays of the case, and found that it did not contain any hazardous materials. The case was disposed of.
Police cleared the scene at 10:15 a.m.
