A former educational technician at the Congin Elementary School in Westbrook turned himself in on Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest after he allegedly assaulted a six-year-old student.

According to the Westbrook police department, the alleged assault occurred on April 1 when former ed-tech Dan Spring, 62, of Portland reportedly assaulted a child. There is no indication that the alleged assault was sexual in nature.

Following the alleged incident, there was a police investigation and a prosecutorial review, after which police sought and obtained an arrest warrant.

Spring turned himself in to the police department after the warrant was issued. Police transported him to the Cumberland County Jail, and he is currently out on bail.

Spring is no longer listed on the Congin Elementary School’s employee directory.

Though police provided few details on the incident, one Facebook user, George Higgins, claims to be the victim’s father and added additional information.

“We’ve kept this private until now.. this man assaulted our son who is living with Autism On April 1st of this year.. He avoided being served a summons but now an ARREST WARRENT [sic] has been issued!! Please help us locate this man! His name is Dan Spring he used to live in Westbrook Maine and work at the Congin elementary school but he got evicted from where he was living,” said Higgins.

“He thinks he can assault children and get away with it! Please share and if you do see him or know his whereabouts please notify the local authorities! Our family would greatly appreciate your help…. If you’re in Westbrook please call the Westbrook police dept,” he added.

Higgins’ post also included a screenshot of what appears to be the school’s staff directory page for Spring before it was removed.

The Maine Wire could not independently verify Higgins’s claims.
