The chair of the Anson Board of Selectmen, Arnold P. Luce, 68, resigned from his post after he allegedly assaulted a woman last Wednesday at his business “Luce’s Meat Market” in what the Somerset Sheriff’s Department called a “potential sex offense.”

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office received information last Thursday about what they described as a “potential sexual assault” that had occurred the day before at Luce’s business on Embden Road.
Deputy Stacey Slate met with an adult female alleged victim to discuss the reported incident.
As a result of an investigation, Luce was issued a summons for an assault charge under Title 17-A Section 207 of Maine law, which governs domestic violence assault against family or household members.
Somerset Sheriff Dale Lancaster refused to provide additional details on the incident or alleged victim when asked by Central Maine. Luce owns the meat business with his wife, Elaine Luce, according to their website.
Luce’s charges notably do not include any sexual assault charges, and he was only issued a summons to appear in court on November 5 rather than being arrested.
Nancy Gove, Anson’s tax collector, administrative assistant, and treasurer told Central Maine that Luce resigned from his selectman position in a letter dated August 10, but provided few details on the reason for his decision.
The town’s board of selectmen reportedly already voted unanimously to fill Anson’s vacant seat with former vice-chairman Jim Smith.
As of Friday afternoon, Anson’s official town website still lists Luce as the chair of their Board of Selectmen.
