The Scarborough Police received a call at 12:29 p.m. on Friday reporting a vehicle theft from the Cumberland Farms gas station on Payne Road.
As officers investigated the reported theft, they learned that the alleged carjacker, Paul Garland, 40, of Oakland, had abandoned the vehicle at Pet Quarters, and had reportedly stolen another car there.
The suspect allegedly crashed the second vehicle into the parking lot of the Scarborough Michael’s store before fleeing the crash site on foot.
He reportedly fled to a nearby construction site adjacent to the Sebago Brewing Company, where he allegedly tried to steal yet another vehicle.
By the time officers arrived, Garland had allegedly broken into the vehicle but had not yet been able to steal it. He once again fled on foot.
Law enforcement chased the suspect down and took Garland into custody.
The Scarborough Police Department charged him with three counts of theft by unauthorized use of property, two counts of violating bail conditions, and one count of refusing to submit to arrest.
After the arrest, police learned that Garland was allegedly involved in another vehicle theft earlier that same day in Auburn, and he was charged with an additional count of theft by unauthorized use of property and violating bail conditions.

Garland apparently has a lengthy history of crime. In 2012, he was sentenced to eight years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release after he robbed the teller at Taconnet Federal Credit Union in Skowhegan at knife point.
