The vice principal of the Scarborough High School died in a fiery crash on Saturday after he allegedly fled from police in at high speed and veered off-road.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Bangor Regional Communications Center received multiple calls reporting a 2021 gray Jeep Wrangler driving erratically on I-295 southbound near Richmond.

State Police eventually located the Jeep near mile marker 16 in Yarmouth, and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver, Jacob Brown, 34, of Scarborough, initially came to a stop but then reportedly fled at high speed, prompting state troopers to begin a pursuit with sirens and lights activated.

As officers began to catch up with Brown, they saw the Jeep veer off-road at mile marker 13 southbound in Cumberland.

Brown’s vehicle crashed into the woods and became engulfed in flames. Brown was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was launched from the flaming wreck.

Officers pulled him away from the flames and attempted to administer life-saving measures, but Brown was eventually pronounced dead at the scene. He was the vice principal at Scarborough High School, and earlier news reports on Monday indicated that he had “died unexpectedly.”

Investigators believe that speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.
