Vice President JD Vance and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt delivered a joint briefing on Wednesday afternoon, intensifying pressure on Senate Democrats as the federal government shutdown continued.
Vance and Leavitt framed the standoff as a clear choice: reopen the government now, then negotiate policy. They said Democratic demands to tie funding to expanded benefits for noncitizens undermine American workers and threaten core services.
GOP lawmakers say nearly all House Republicans and many Senate Republicans have already voted to reopen the government. They are urging moderate Democrats, some privately critical of their leadership’s approach, to join them.
Union leaders and business groups echoed White House calls for action. Teamsters President Sean O’Brien told Democrats, “American workers are not bargaining chips.” The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer, Neil Brady warned “that shutdowns harm business and the economy.”
Vance and Leavitt accused Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and progressive Democrats of ceding control to their party’s far-left wing. They said the shutdown reflects internal political brinkmanship rather than genuine policy debate.
They warned that vital services are strained, military pay has stopped, low income assistance is in jeopardy and flood insurance programs face interruption in storm-vulnerable regions.
While the administration remains committed to reducing health care costs, Vance said “those conversations must wait.”
“You don’t shut down the people’s government to force every policy demand,” he said, adding Republicans are “willing to negotiate in good faith, but only after the government reopens.”
Administration officials warned a prolonged funding lapse will force difficult choices, including furloughs, payment delays and disruptions in essential services. With bipartisan pressure building and public frustration mounting, the next move rests with Senate Democrats. In the coming days, attention will focus on whether a clean continuing resolution can break the deadlock.
