A suspect nabbed Thursday in a fatal hit-and-run may have been hopped up on drugs, according to state police.

Cops grabbed Tyler Hewitt, 31, of Presque Isle after authorities received reports of a “suspicious person” walking on Hill Road in Clinton.

Hewitt was allegedly behind the wheel of a Uhaul van that veered off the road and slammed into a tree Tuesday.

Clinton police found Hewitt coming out of the woods near I-95 two days after the accident.

Hewitt was driving on a suspended license, cops say, in the crash that killed John Perkins, 38, of Hampden.

Hewitt reportedly ran away from the crash before police got there.

Police say Hewitt was carrying a large amount of meth in a backpack when they found him.

He’s been charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and operating after suspension.
