A senior U.S. senator is calling for an investigation into a wedding planning conglomerate used by many young Maine couples.

The Knot is a go-to marriage planner offering nearly 100 wedding venues across Maine.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, says The Knot is deceiving people across the U.S. who use it to help plan their special day.

The Iowa Republican claims the committee has received hundreds of whistleblower reports.

Grassley says small businesses accuse the site of misleading advertising and failing to provide discounts promised to customers.

In a letter to the Federal Trade Commission, Grassley is asking the agency to investigate the site.

He says the reports he’s gotten show that these are not isolated incidents.

The company has previously denied any wrongdoing.

The Knot shows 95 available Maine wedding sites on its website, from Wells in the south to Minot near the Lewiston-Auburn region, and dozens of venues in between.

Prices run the gamut from $1,000 at the Maine Classic Car Museum in Kennebunkport to $20,000 at the Old Saco Inn in Fryeburg.
