AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Janet Mills (D) ordered all State of Maine offices closed statewide on Monday, Feb. 23, 2026, as a powerful nor’easter moved toward Maine with heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions, according to a Sunday press release from the Governor’s Office.
The Governor’s Office said the storm is expected to begin Sunday night and continue through Monday, with the National Weather Service forecasting 7 to 14 inches of snow in parts of Maine and wind gusts up to 40 mph in some areas. The release warned that periods of moderate to heavy snow and blowing snow could sharply reduce visibility and make travel hazardous.
Mills urged Mainers to take the storm seriously and limit travel if possible, saying crews and first responders need room to keep roads clear and communities safe.
A separate Maine.gov Citizen Alert also confirmed that state offices would be closed all day Monday due to severe winter storm conditions and repeated the warning from Mills urging extra caution for anyone traveling.
The Governor’s Office said the Maine Emergency Management Agency is coordinating with the Maine Department of Transportation, electric utilities, and local emergency management partners to monitor conditions and respond as needed.
For Mainers with state business planned for Monday, the closure means checking agency websites or phone lines before heading out once conditions improve.
