The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department was forced to respond on Friday to yet another hoax call reporting a threat against a school, prompting a lockdown at the Lake Region High School.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., Cumberland deputies responded after a call was placed to the Lake Region High School in Naples reporting that someone in the parking lot was armed with a rifle.

The school resource officer from the sheriff’s department was on-site at the time, and additional deputies and officers from other law enforcement agencies responded.

A search of the school grounds revealed no threats, but the school was placed on lockdown for approximately half an hour.

The incident remains under investigation.

This is part of an apparently growing trend of similar hoaxes striking Maine schools, causing lockdowns and wasting significant law enforcement resources.

Just last Wednesday, the Cumberland Sheriff’s Department responded to false reports of a shooter at Bonny Eagle High School.
