LEWISTON — A cease harassment notice served through the Lewiston Police Department against a local resident was later voided after police determined the interactions in question involved communication with an elected official acting in his official capacity.
Andrew Jones reported to the Maine Wire on Monday evening that he was served earlier in the day with a cease harassment notice issued by Ward 3 City Councilor and District 94 State Representative Scott Harriman.
Jones said he was uncertain what prompted the notice, suggesting it could be related to his regular criticism of Harriman in his role as a city councilor. He also noted the possibility that the notice may have been connected to a photograph he took and later published showing artwork Harriman created while members of the public were speaking during public comment at a council meeting.
Jones further indicated he had recently become aware of an official Maine House social media account associated with Harriman and alleged that he and others had been blocked from viewing and participating on the account. He stated that he emailed Harriman the previous evening requesting immediate removal from the block list.
Jones reported to the Maine Wire on Monday evening that Lewiston police later informed him the cease harassment notice had been voided after officers determined that all interactions he had with Harriman occurred in Harriman’s capacity as an elected official.
Jones stated he plans to attend the April 7 Lewiston City Council meeting to speak about what he described as a misuse of police services. He also reported submitting a Freedom of Access Act request to the city and the Lewiston Police Department seeking records related to the cease harassment notice issued against himself and his wife, Lisa Jones.
