BOSTON – Massachusetts Democrats plan to provide an additional $1 million dollars to a state program which provides legal representation to illegal immigrants facing deportation, with the fund revenue generated by taxpayers in standard financing procedure.
In a nod to the “tax the rich” narrative, Democrats plan to extract the needed funds by capitalizing on the state’s 4 percent surtax on incomes exceeding $1 million dollars. Senate President Karen Spilka, a Democrat from Ashland, cited the need to support counsel initiatives amid increased federal immigration enforcement under President Trump’s administration.
The proposal is set to be included in a supplemental spending bill scheduled for release Thursday, according to WBUR News.
The Massachusetts Access to Counsel Initiative has already received $5 million dollars after being signed under Gov. Maura Healey in 2025, providing no-cost legal services to individuals facing deportation in immigration court.
In these situations, defendants often do not have a right to a court-appointed counsel. Therefore, the Massachusetts taxpayer comes to the rescue with the initiative program that provides 24 full-time immigration attorneys across the state. As of late March, demand has already surpassed expectations with thousands flocking to the initiative’s dedicated hotline.
The supplemental $1 million in cash would be sourced from the state-proposed “millionaires tax”, which presents a 4 percent surtax on high-income individuals. Bottom line, this wealth redistribution setup directly channels revenue from higher income earners into a taxpayer funded legal defense program representing detained illegal immigrants.
Spilka stated that continual funding is essential because “the Trump administration is continuing to increase the number of people that they are — I hate to use the term kidnapping at times — but suddenly appearing and grabbing people.” She went on to describe the program as a critical service necessity for those detained, providing them with free-of-cost attorneys to assist evading prosecution by federal authorities.

As if this taxpayer liquidity injection wasn’t enough, advocates with the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition are also seeking $15 million more bucks in the next state budget to further the ongoing initiative’s footprint and reach. The pieces fall right in accordance with Democrat marching orders it seems, as other blue-states offer similar programs and funding in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon, and Washington.
The latest move in socialist-esque class warfare, reflects northeast Democrat commitment of state-level support and taxpayer revenue re-distribution directly in support of illegal immigrants facing deportation under federal law. The fact of the matter is, the blue-state coalition of Democrat states isn’t very original in terms of ideas, therefore Maine should prepare itself for the same script to be unveiled soon.
