Officers from the South Portland Police Department were dispatched at approximately 4 a.m. Friday to Summit Terrace apartments for a domestic violence call with shots fired.

Upon arrival, the victim told the officers that Christapher Dodge, 47, had fled the apartment in his pickup truck.

During the officers’ investigation, Dodge returned to the scene and engaged the officers in an “armed confrontation.”

Officer Anthony Verville shot Dodge, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Verville has been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure in all police involved shootings.

The incident will be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.
