A head-on crash on Forest Ave. in Portland Tuesday left one person dead and another injured, according to Portland Police.

Police responded to the crash, which occurred in the area of the Maine Turnpike overpass near 1808 Forest Ave., shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

As a result of the crash, Forest Ave. between Riverside Industrial Pkwy. and Riverside St. was closed until approximately 5:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police that one of the vehicles involved in the crash — driven by a 62-year-old man from Cape Elizabeth — crossed the centerline of Forest Ave., hitting another vehicle head on.

Portland’s Medical Crisis Unit (MedCU) responded and attempted to resuscitate the driver, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear if a medical event contributed to the cause of the two-car crash, police said Tuesday.

The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash, a 35-year-old South Portland man, sustained broken bones and was taken to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The names of those involved in the crash are being withheld pending the notification of their families.
