Local Residents Frustrated As Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey Turns Boston Community Center Into Housing For Migrants

On Tuesday,ย reports emergedย that Gov. Maura Healey turned a community center in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston into a makeshift residence for hundreds of migrants.

According to the Massachusetts state website, Melnea Cass Recreational Complex “offers a large indoor arena for year-round fun.” Residents in the Roxbury community use the facility for sports and other events.

Unfortunately for members of the Roxbury community, the priorities of migrants appear to have been placed ahead of them.

According to Gov. Healey, the move is a last resort, as many migrants have slept in Logan International Airport over the last few weeks due to state-ran shelters being filled.

Gov. Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu toured the facility on Wednesday.

Afterward, Healey held a press conference expressing her frustration with the difficult situation.

“We’re here today because we really don’t have a choice,” Healey said.

According to aย report by WBUR, the state will relocate approximately 400 migrants to the facility.

As she has repeatedly stated, Gov. Healey believes that Congress is at fault for the current situation.

“I continue to call on Congress to act. President Biden has put forward a plan.” Gov. Healey asserted.

Many community members expressed frustration with the situation.

Speaking to Boston25 News, Louis Elisa, President of the Garrison Trotter Neighborhood Association, felt that the move to house migrants in the recreational center is far from ideal.

“The space while good is a gymnasium. It will not provide the health and safety and security that you want for families,” said Elisa.

He noted that he has a background in refugee resettlement since he worked for FEMA and NATO during the Clinton administration.

Other Roxbury residents expressed anger that the state is using their community to house the migrants.

According to a report by news outlet WCVB, protestors showed up at the Cass Complex on Wednesday to express their displeasure with migrants being housed there.

Protestors held signs that read, “Why Roxbury? Try Wellesley!” and “Close the Border Help Boston Kids First.”

Gov. Healey has reiterated that the situation is only temporary, with migrants expected to reside in the Melnea Cass Recreational Complex through May.

They are illegals, not migrants. Now give us a rundown of all the free stuff taxpayers give them. Maine is just as bad, putting criminals before citizens.

And the congress person from that area talks about Walgreens closing and not what the American kids there are missing out on. By the way the political powers in that area of Boston are not Independents Mr. King. Why do you support them? You could change!
