President Joe Biden has faced heavy criticism this week after he recounted a 2021 conversation he had with French President Francois Mitterand who died in 1996.
Biden also forgot which country he was discussing, initially calling the late President Mitterand the leader of Germany.
“And Mitterand, from Germany—I mean, from France looked at me and said—said, ‘You know, what—why—how long you back for,’” said President Biden.
At a campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday, Biden brought up the conversation with the dead man as he was pushing the common Democrat talking point which characterizes the January 6 protest as a violent insurrection incited by President Donald Trump.
Biden recounted a 2021 meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders, and claimed that, at the meeting, he announced that “America is back.”
Biden used the “America is back” quote to criticize the January 6 protest, and characterized it as a national shame, which was criticized by other NATO leaders.
“What would we say that happened in another democracy around the world? Well, the whole world watched — the whole world watched. And what’s going on,” said Biden.
He ended his discussion of the NATO meeting by assuring his audience that Trump will not win the 2024 election, and accusing him of calling immigrants “vermin.”
After the campaign event, Biden came under fire for his mistakes, with many using the event as further evidence of the president’s loss of mental acuity.
Following the meeting, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about Biden’s mental fitness.
“How is president Biden ever going to convince the three quarters of voters who are worried about his physical and metal health that he is ok, even though in Las Vegas he told a story about recently talking to a French president who died in 1996,” said the reporter.
Press secretary Jean-Pierre did nothing to dispel the reporter’s concerns, instead responding with irritation that the reporter would ask about the president’s mental capacity.
“I’m not even gonna go down that rabbit hole with you sir,” said Jean-Pierre.
