A Portland man is facing 12 criminal charges after leading police on a 20-minute chase Sunday afternoon.
Portland Police said that at 2:17 p.m. on Sunday an officer observed a woman waving frantically for help out of the passenger side window of a vehicle on Forest Avenue.
When the officer attempted to make a traffic stop, the vehicle continued on, leading to a 20-minute chase through Deering, downtown Portland, and eventually northbound on I-295, police said.
According to Portland Police, several officers pursued the car and observed the female passenger open the passenger door of the moving vehicle.
Police said an effort to stop the vehicle with a spike strip was unsuccessful due to heavy traffic.
The car eventually pulled over around mile-marker 12 on I-295, and the driver of the vehicle, 34-year-old Benjamin Martineau of Portland, was arrested and transported to Cumberland County Jail.
Martineau faces a total of 12 charges, including Criminal Restraint, Domestic Violence (DV) Assault, DV Criminal Threatening, Eluding an Officer, Refusal to Stop, Reckless Conduct with a Dangerous Weapon, two counts of Driving to Endanger, Obstructing the Report of a Crime, Operating Without A License, Terrorizing and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
