The City of Portland has announced that it is looking to hire a new director for their Department of Planning and Urban Development, an executive post overseeing the city’s activities related to housing, land use, zoning, historic preservation, and other development matters.

The starting annual salary range for the municipal position is $119,868-$138,890, and falls under the supervision of the Portland City Manager, Danielle West.

The new Planning and Urban Development Department head will oversee an operating budget of $1.9 million and a staff of 17 department employees.

The director will also be responsible for following the city’s several “strategic initiatives,” including Portland’s Plan 2030, to maintain the recently launched Housing Data Dashboard, and join the ongoing project to overhaul Portland’s land use code.

“The City of Portland is a drug free work environment and is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer strongly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in its workplace,” the city’s job description document reads.

On the job application, the city states that it is “strongly committed to diversity in its workforce.”

“Women and Minorities are encouraged to apply. We are an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity employer,” the application reads.

The city is also currently looking to hire a new director of their Health and Human Services Department, after the previous director Kristen Dow resigned in October.

According to Portland’s employment application portal, the city currently is hiring for a total of 77 vacant positions, including shelter attendants, counselors and security at the city’s Homeless Services Center, police officers, 911 dispatchers, and caseworkers for the 179-bed shelter for migrants at 166 Riverside Industrial Parkway.
