Patriot’s Day: Maine Dems Mark Anniversary of American War for Independence by Voting for Gun Control

The measure will expand background checks to include purchases that supporters say exploit a loophole in current law

The Democrat-controlled Maine State Legislature elected on Patriot’s Day — the holiday that commemorates some of the first battles in America’s Revolutionary War against a tyrannical government — by voting for more restrictions of Mainers’ Second Amendment rights.

[Editorial: History Shows Gun Control Inevitably Becomes a Political Weapon…]

According to Maine’s State Constitution, Article I, Section 16 further solidifies and clarifies the Second Amendment originally enshrined in the federal bill of rights, stating the following: “Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.”

That language is contravened by Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ gun control proposals (LD 2224), which got the stamp of approval from a majority of Democratic lawmakers in both the House and the Senate on Monday.

Under the proposed legislation, background checks will be legally required for all private gun sales advertised online or in print, including Uncle Henry’s and online market places. Current law only mandates background checks for sales conducted through federally licensed dealers.

Additionally, the bill seeks to make it easier for law enforcement to intervene during mental health crises by allowing police to take individuals who may pose a threat to themselves or others into protective custody for medical assessment, even if no crime has been committed.

Although Democratic lawmakers telegraphed their intent to advance gun control legislation early last year, they started leveraging the Oct. 25th mass shooting in Lewiston to renew flagging support for their agenda before Robert R. Card, Jr., had even been found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The “Independent Commission” investigating the Lewiston shooting has already determined that existing Maine gun laws, if properly enforced, could have prevented Card’s killing spree.

The legislation approved Monday also proposes the establishment of more “crisis intervention centers” as alternatives to hospitals and jails for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies.

The measures will face additional votes in the House and Senate before heading to Gov. Mills’ desk.

[RELATED: Troy Jackson Backs Gun Control After Gun Control Group Hires His Son’s Firm…]

In the Senate, Senate President Troy Jackson (D-Aroostook), a twenty-year proponent of the Second Amendment, recently signalled his willingness to flip his longstanding position and back gun control.

Jackson’s shift on civil liberties came after the Maine Gun Safety Coalition began payments to the Resurgam Group, a lobbying firm started by Jackson’s former Chief of Staff, B.J. McCollister, and Jackson’s son, Chace Jackson.

Shortly after those payments started flowing to his son’s firm, Jackson was caught on audio obtained by the Maine Wire explaining that Maine hunters and sportsmen should get on board with gun control if they want to continue to be free to partake if shooting sports and hunting.

“I mean, if you’re a gun advocate, if you’re someone, uh, comes from a hunting, you know, tradition, I would say that the best way to make sure that you continue to do what you you love and, uh, have done all your life, is to make sure that Robert Card doesn’t get, that people like Robert Card, doesn’t have weapons,” Jackson said.

Jackson voted in favor of the gun control legislation, while two Democrats — Sen. Craig Hickman (D-Kennebec) and Sen. Joe Baldacci (D-Penobscot) — joined the GOP in opposition.

Today, we commemorate the Battles of Lexington and Concord, which marked the start of the Revolutionary War.

These are Communists. Democrats never use to be pro big Pharma, endless wars, big corporations and said they were fot the working class. They hate the working class now.

Troy Jackson actually had the nerve to post that while he, the Dems and Mills legislate as if they are kings and aristocrats?

    Wow.
Talk about no self awareness or sense of shame!

Want to know the worst part? In 2019 Lisa Keim – a Republican drafted the yellow flag law. Republicans LITERALLY worked with Democrats in Maine to pass the most “Progressive” Gun Law in Maine.

Since the fake Republican worked with Democrats to sneak in a bill that most Mainers didn’t want, over 100+ Mainers have had their guns stripped from them and that number is growing quickly.

Lisa Keim is a nasty cunt.

  7. MaineGoat on April 16, 2024 7:31 AM

You are all fools if you blame Democrats on this one. Maine Republicans (Lisa Keim) created and passed the original yellow flag law. Democrats and MSM praised her for her Progressive actions. This current bill slightly makes her original bill a little worse. But the meat and potatoes came from Republicans.

Lisa Keim is a traitor to the party. The only way that Maine would get a Yellow/Red Flag law was by having a Republican spearhead it. This way the rightwing sheep wouldn’t question it.

Lisa Keim opened the door and created the absolute foundation for Democrats to begin the process of enhancing her Yellow Flag Law and soon turn it into a Red Flag Law.

Lisa Keim’s bill that she got passed by working directly with the Left allowed law enforcement without due process to place Mainers into an institution and seize their firearms for up to a year with the possibility of enhancing that time, determined by a judge.

Red Flag Laws which WILL come to Maine will bypass the Law Enforcement step and allow family and others to go petition a judge directly to seize your firearms AND institutionalize you against your own free will with NO due process.

Lisa Keim made this all possible.

  8. RepublicansAreRetarded on April 16, 2024 7:35 AM

I am laughing right now at all the retarded Mainers on here. They have no idea that it was their republican party in 2019 that got this law passed by secretly working with Democrats.

  9. SpiderWebDeb on April 16, 2024 7:45 AM

Blame Lisa Keim. She codified this back in 2019. She also happens to be a Republican. She worked hand in hand with Democrats. Both Susan Collins and Lisa Keim are rhinos who support “high capacity bans” in Maine and further gun bans.

Why is always republican women that side with Democrats? Starting to see a trend here…

“DEATH TO AMERICA” are words I am thinking about, are you!

  11. TomCollins on April 16, 2024 7:55 AM

The real problem is with the republicans in Maine. They are the ones who quietly went behind your backs and got the yellow flag laws passed with democrats a few years ago.

  12. Chris on April 16, 2024 8:04 AM

Isn’t that a nice cozy relationship between the Maine Gun Safety Coalition, his chief of staff, and his son? As they say, follow the money. Another self interested dem willing to sacrifice your rights to line his own pockets.

  13. Corinne F Franklin on April 16, 2024 8:10 AM

Because of the failure of people performing their jobs (investigating the shooter) ie: the yellow flag law, they now want to punish law abiding citizens. I almost believe they let that shooting happen so that would have an excuse to pass a law to make it easier to take our guns. With congress voting to continue the FISA act which allows for warrantless searches they are going after us full bore. (pardon the pun)

  14. jph517 on April 16, 2024 8:34 AM

Just wait until all the Mainers that say “guns are ok for hunting” realize they are next. It will be far too late then. Just look at the history of EVERY other country that banned guns. ALL of your rights will follow soon after, including your right to live.

  15. Sadday on April 16, 2024 8:45 AM

I normally like The Maine Wire, but disappointed that Steve left out the fact that Lisa Keim and a small handful of fake republicans created the original yellow flag bill which paved the way for democrats to expand upon it.

We all called this back in 2019 when we were all saying that Lisa Keim was selling us out to the democrats while she praised her “groundbreaking” bill that would infringe upon our rights.

Republicans tried to keep this quiet in Maine while they worked directly with Janet Mills.

  16. Dudley on April 16, 2024 8:57 AM

Additionally, the bill seeks to make it easier for law enforcement to intervene during mental health crises by allowing police to take individuals who may pose a threat to themselves or others into protective custody for medical assessment, even if no crime has been committed.

This is great news! The day before elections, citizens displaying TDS, a clearly recognizable and recognized mental health crisis, can now legally be brought into protective custody, thus eliminating their dangerous vote.

Think of this as a “Red Flag law” for voters. Remember, what’s good for one constitutional right (2nd amendment) is good for others (right to vote).
And for those that would argue gun violence is not comparable to political violence, I would agree, political violence is clearly far more dangerous.

  17. Woodcanoe on April 16, 2024 10:39 AM

Communists just love totally disarming all those citizens that they wish to have 100% control over. There are over 500 million firearms in civilian hands in America. Most of them in the hands of the communist party’s enemies……..real conservatives. I suspect if they keep on this track they are going to have to actually declare war on us, their political enemies, and the only way they are going to get weapons away from us is that they are going to have to come and try and take them by force. We will have Civil War III long before that happens. In fact I think the democrat party is trying to push up into an uprising so they can just kill all of us that they hate like this.

  18. Beachmom on April 18, 2024 5:41 AM

For years the ME GOP has mostly been spineless. Caving to Democrats while us voters yelled and screamed not to be so wimpy all the time.
Illegals, yellow flag, welfare, subsidized housing, etc.
    We were ignored.
    This is the result.
    Loss of rights.
Anti Constitution laws, anti American laws, a state that’s too expensive to stay in.

This is a good example of how the decisions we make today will affect us 5 & 10 yrs down the road.

  19. Mainer on April 20, 2024 9:15 AM

Everyone needs to email Janet mills office and tell her to VETO these bills. Especially the 72 hour waiting period!!! Email her now via the govorners website or NRAs website. You can and should also call her office. Tell her to veto these unconstitutional bills. We have less than 10 days to do so.
